Co-Director’s Corner
September 2011
I love the start of school!
I appreciate that our schools are bright, positively decorated, and welcoming to new and returning students. We strive to make our school environment is safe and friendly, and we work hard to create caring environments that foster learning. I enjoy welcoming back our returning students, and I like seeing their energy and hope for the coming year. They seem so grown up after a summer away, and they are excited to share about their summer opportunities and how they plan to let those experiences guide their coming work. In addition, everyone is welcoming to our incoming 9th graders, and it is fun to watch their eagerness as they learn about their new school. The 2011-2012 school year offers great possibilities to all.
The beginning of the year is a great time to start new routines. Please support students to have a great academic year by
- Encouraging them to go to bed at a reasonable hour so they get plenty of rest.
- Eating a nutritious breakfast (breakfast is provided at the Met from 8:30 to 9:00)
- Arriving to school on time (students should plan to be here by 8:50)
- Attending school every day
Students should plan to be in school or at their internship every day from 8:30 to 3:00, and all 9th grade students should plan to participate in our afterschool Extended Day Program. Upperclass students are also invited to join these programs.
I am proud of our annual average attendance rate of 92% which is one of the highest in the city, and I believe that we will continue or increase that rate again this year. Please note that the Met’s Attendance Policy is available on the website at for your review.
I also want to thank all of the parents who supported their children as they attended our summer math program and NECAP camp. I am proud of the students for their focus on math over the summer. We will continue to support all students build their 21st century skills, especially those in the math and sciences.
Here is to a great 2011-2012 school year!
