Met Flex program to focus on flexibility

The Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, a state-funded public school system and local education agency, will launch a new program in March.

The Met Flex program is geared toward young adults, aged 16 to 21, who need flexible hours in earning their high school diploma.

The Met will launch the program on March 5; information nights will be held Jan. 31 and Feb. 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 325 Public St., Providence, at the Justice Building on the Met campus.

The program includes online classes, one-on-one tutoring, social service support, career counseling and internships.

Dear Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center Parents:

I am writing to ask you to take an important ten-minute online survey, called SurveyWorks, about our school. The Rhode Island Department of Education conducts this survey each year. It gives schools important feedback on these key areas for school success:

climate and safety
teaching and learning
family involvement
resources

As principal, I believe your feedback is essential to student and school success. Your views on matters like the safety of your child at school, the way students are taught, the condition of the school, and how connected you feel to this school are important to us. By taking this short survey you can help us to make improvements to our school. This survey is voluntary. Responses are anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual and no one can find out how you answered the survey.

Parents can take the short survey online or on paper between January 5, 2012 and February 16, 2012. To take the survey online go to: www.surveyworks.ride.ri.gov and click on “Take a Survey”.

If you don’t have access to a computer or the Internet or prefer to take the survey using pen and paper, you can pick up a paper survey in the school office or fill out the form below and return it to the school. We will send a paper copy of the survey and an envelope home with your child. Please return the completed survey in the envelope to the school no later than February 16, 2012. (If school can provide a computer for parent access, please add sentence here.)

Both the paper and online version of the survey will require you to enter the school code listed at the bottom of this sheet. The code allows the survey administrator to track the survey response rate for our school but does not identify you.

Survey Works

The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE) is working with the MET and Schools around the state to offer the state’s student survey, SurveyWorks. The information collected from this survey will help us improve curriculum, school climate, and other school-based programs.

All Met students are being asked to participate in this online survey at their school. There are no academic or physical tests involved in the survey and it will take a student about 20 to 25 minutes to complete.

If you do not want your child to participate, please complete the attached form as soon as possible. The school will assume that you give your child permission to take survey if you do not return this slip before January 19, 2012. If you change your mind after that time period, you may e-mail or call the school to let them know. You may return the form to the school office in person, by mail, or by having your child return it for you. Please let your child know if he/she will or will not be taking the survey; if not, then he/she will be given another kind of school activity to do during the survey time. Thank you for your cooperation with this important effort.

Please take a few minutes to review and give us some feedback about our revised School Family Involvement Policy. Your input on this policy will be used to evaluate and implement it over the coming year. Use the form at the bottom of the page give us your comments.

School Family Involvement Policy 2011-2012

This policy was written and agreed upon by families to link families with school administration and faculty with the goal to improve student achievement. Family Involvement is a key component in the education of our children.

Met School will implement Family Involvement Policy requirements by:

Jointly developing a policy in which both school and families agree
Notify families about the policy in understandable, uniform format in a language that families can understand
Hold annual meetings at flexible times and days
Provide families timely information, a description and explanation of the school curriculum, forms of academic assessment, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet through family engagement meetings
Periodically update Family Involvement Policy to meet the changing needs of families and the school
Make Family Involvement Policy available to families by distributing to families and posting on Met school web site
Incorporate The School Family Compact as component of its School Family Involvement Policy which will be signed by the advisor, family and the student

Met Family Engagement and support among school, family and community will take place in the following ways:

Informational Family Workshops
Exhibition of student work presented and evaluated by family, mentor and staff each trimester
Learning plan meetings with advisor, student and family each trimester to help student reach proficiency in core curriculum
Provide material on available resources in their community
Provide information to parents in various languages
Family Fun Evening activities including Met sponsored activities & events
To provide support to and recruitment of mentors and other community volunteers through ongoing outreach efforts in the community

Communicate with families through:

Met Web site
WHAM Met newsletter sent home to families by mail
Narratives sent each trimester detailing student accomplishments and goals
Standardized Test Results
Regular Family Engagement meetings in each school
Personal contact by phone, mail and email
Annual Title I meeting
Informational Meetings and flyers on Title I Services
